A new academic year began at fedaEDU on 1 September. We are delighted to welcome around 30 young, motivated individuals from all over the world to our school, and we look forward to supporting them as they embark on this new chapter in their lives.

As always, the first days of school are filled with excitement and anticipation. That is why fedaEDU Barcelona German Business School runs a carefully prepared induction week to support the students right from day one.

Day 1: First Steps, Programmes and Dual Training

The first day begins with an official welcome from the headteacher, followed by an introduction to the entire fedaEDU team. This includes the teaching staff as well as colleagues from the administration, sales and marketing departments. This makes it much easier to remember all the new names and faces. The various training programmes are also presented. fedaEDU offers a wide range of options: an English-taught Bachelor’s degree programme in ‘International Business’; dual vocational training programmes for Industrial Management Assistant (Industrial Clerk), Freight Forwarding and Logistics Clerk, or Digitalization Management Specialist.; a vocational preparation year (10+1) and the study programme integrated with vocational training.

Five questions to get to know each other

With so many new faces, it’s only natural that everyone wants to get to know each other better. The students are divided into small groups and given the task of asking each other five questions before introducing their partner to the whole group. Many of them would never have imagined that they would end up studying at FedaEDU in Barcelona, doing their course in German. The reasons they chose Barcelona as their study destination include the sun, the beach and the sea, as well as the diverse cultures and vibrant city life.

Class teachers, teams and the timetable

During the organisational part of the morning, the house rules were presented. Key points included punctuality, mutual respect, the learning culture, and dealing with absences. The first day also involved various other administrative tasks, such as setting up communication via Outlook, organising classes, familiarising oneself with the timetable and getting to know the relevant contacts. There was plenty of time to chat and get to know one another during the breaks. The timetable was then handed out to small groups organised according to each student’s degree or vocational course und explained by the teaching staff.

The German Chamber of Commerce for Spain and the Dual Vocational Training

In the afternoon, the pupils took part in an online meeting with Tanja Nause, Head of the ‘Members and Events’ department at the AHK (German Chamber of Commerce for Spain). In her capacity as a representative of the AHK, she emphasised once again the special nature of her work, the importance of the report booklet in vocational training, and the close collaboration with fedaEDU. Upon completing their dual vocational training, trainees sit their final examination at AHK Spain and receive a qualification recognised by the German Chamber of Commerce.

A tour of the school

To help them familiarise themselves with the premises, the pupils were divided into three groups and given a tour of the school building. In addition to the classrooms, they were shown safety-related areas such as the locations of the fire extinguishers, first-aid kits and emergency exits.

AI in everyday school life

To conclude the session, Dr Müller, the Digitalisation Management form tutor, introduced the topic of artificial intelligence in class. The first step was to explain what AI actually is and the various forms it takes. It was clear to everyone that the use of AI had become an integral part of everyday life. This makes it all the more important to understand how AI works so that it can be used effectively in the workplace and at school.

Day 2: International education and the values of fedaEDU

Language tests and level assessments during fedaEDU’s Welcome Week.

On the second day, the programme started with a language placement test. After a brief conversation with the teaching staff, each pupil was placed in German, English or Spanish lessons according to their ability. This personalised approach to placement ensures that everyone can continue learning at exactly the right level.

Integrated Language Learning

Alongside regular language lessons in Spanish, English and German, the ‘German in subject lessons’ approach was introduced. In practice, this means that subjects such as maths and business studies are taught in German too. This helps to improve learners’ language skills.

Together we are fedaEDU

During a workshop, the students explored the mission statement of fedaEDU. After all, a mission statement should not merely be a vision hanging on the wall; it should be something that is put into practice, in keeping with the motto ‘Together we are fedaEDU’. The students were tasked with examining its values and objectives. To this end, they were divided into groups to address three key questions.

Results ot the Workshop

Once again, small groups were formed to encourage creativity and team building. The groups were given three photographs, each symbolising a particular attitude, and had to answer the questions using them. The pictures were then presented and explained to the whole group. The results included:

The traditional city rally: Exploring Barcelona together

On Friday, following the first day of school on Thursday, the first- and second-year apprentices took part in the traditional city rally through Barcelona.

Visiting the Sagrada Familia

With temperatures exceeding 30 degrees, water, sun cream and regular breaks in the shade were essential. Fortunately, this year’s route started close to fedaEDU, at the Sagrada Família. There, each group had to complete a task to impart some historical knowledge to the students, as well as take a selfie on the spot.

Multilingual in Barcelona

The route continued to the Parc Central del Poblenou, then on to Glòries and the Design Museum, and finally to the Mirador Torre Glòries. They then walked into the city centre, passing the historic Arc de Triomf on the way, before ending the rally in the Parc de la Ciutadella. There was also a bilingual tandem session there. Participants were divided into groups of three and spent ten minutes chatting in Spanish or German. This activity was perfect for getting to know each other better and improving language skills.

Prize-giving ceremony and joint closing

Meanwhile, the teachers marked the answers from the city rally in order to select the winning group. To conclude the event, a group photo was taken and a small prize-giving ceremony was held. The group with the most correct answers was delighted to receive cinema vouchers.

Despite the heat, the pupils had great fun exploring the city together. One particular benefit was that they were divided into small teams comprising different mother tongues, enabling them to chat freely in various languages. It was a great start to the weekend and the new 2026/27 academic year!
